When personal experience helps too: a new peer support worker at the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre

10. 9. 2026

During the summer holidays, we at the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, took part in a project aimed at encouraging patients and their loved ones to become involved in mental health care.

An important part of this change is the involvement of a peer support worker – that is, someone with personal experience of mental health conditions who is on the road to recovery and uses their experience to support others. Their presence in the care setting is intended to help build patients’ trust, respect, hope and motivation.

Peer support in practice

The pilot scheme will run until the end of May 2027. During this time, the peer support worker will be part of multidisciplinary teams in two acute wards – one for adolescents and one for adults. They will therefore be part of a team comprising physicians, psychologists, therapists, nurses, social workers and healthcare assistants who work together to care for patients. Together with colleagues from the wards, we aim to gradually establish a collaborative approach that provides concrete support to patients not only during their hospital stay, but also as they return to everyday life and reintegrate into society.

Shared experiences can offer patients a new perspective and serve as an important source of hope and motivation – demonstrating that recovery is possible. Our aim is also for peer support to integrate naturally with the work of multidisciplinary teams and, once the project has ended, to gradually extend to other wards.

How can you get involved or find out more?

To help us understand the changes associated with peer support, prepare for them together, and provide a space to share expectations and experiences to date, we are organising a series of introductory training sessions focused on peer support throughout August and September, in collaboration with the Ministry.

We’d like to thank everyone who is actively involved in the training sessions and in the development of peer support.
