On Wednesday, February 11, employees of the Center for Mental Rehabilitation (CDR) and other professionals were able to attend another in a series of clinical seminars held at the Center. This time the educational event focused on eating disorders in children, adolescents and adults.

The seminar was opened with a lecture by MUDr. Petra Uhlíková. The physician, who is responsible for the CDR's inpatient care for children and adolescents, spoke about how early childhood influences the potential development of eating disorders and how our upbringing and the different approaches to food we see in our parents affect us.

"We have an increasing number of children who are showing signs of eating disorders at an early age," Dr. Uhlíková pointed out in her lecture. She also added that it is the most common mental illness in adolescence, which often leads to the early death of patients.

The second part of the seminar belonged to the leading Czech expert on eating disorders, Prof. Hana Papežová, M.D., Csc. She focused on adult patients with eating disorders, as up to one third of patients with eating disorders become chronic and the disease lasts for many years. It is also often associated with other diagnoses, most commonly depression or anxiety.

"The most important thing is always to teach people how to eat again and to arrange a programme in their treatment so that they learn to eat again and do not have a maladaptive attitude to life," emphasised MUDr. Papežová, who is the head of the Centre for Diagnosis and Treatment of Eating Disorders at the Psychiatric Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University in Prague.

Both doctors also pointed out the importance of cooperation at the professional level within the team and between institutions, as well as with the parents of patients.

Clinical seminars are one of the constants of CDR education. They are open to all staff members and to external professionals from the ranks of doctors, psychologists or therapists. Information about planned seminars and other upcoming events can be found on the CDR's education pages.
