As described by psychologist Tereza Příhodová M.A., Ph.D., who is in charge of the group at CDR, the benefits of completing the program are great and improve family relationships in the long term. "Even a small change in the approach to parenting can have a big impact on the well-being of the child and parents and bring a relaxed atmosphere into the family," the psychologist emphasizes.
At the heart of the Triple P programme are several key principles aimed at creating a safe and stimulating environment for the child. The emphasis is on building a positive relationship between parent and child through time spent together, interest and praise. The program encourages desirable behaviors instead of focusing on punishment, teaching parents to set clear rules and be consistent while encouraging them to respond to problematic behaviors in a calm, understanding and appropriate manner. It is also integral to the parents themselves, their psychological well-being and their ability to cope with stress.
The Triple P method was created by Australian psychologist Matthew Sanders and his team and is now used by tens of thousands of professionals worldwide. An accredited training centre was established in the Czech Republic in 2024 with the support of the Ministry of Health and interested future trainers could start applying from September of the same year.
CDR was part of the first wave of facilities to sign up for the programme. And under the guidance of experts commissioned by the Ministry, five therapists working at CDR were trained in the positive parenting approach. "We can't work with children without also working with parents and the family environment. Everyone brings up their child as best they can, but often we copy the patterns we have seen and fail to give our offspring healthy and above all clear and understandable boundaries, even though our goal is correct," explains the importance of the programme one of the trainers Bc. Štěpán Vodenka, DiS., who is mainly involved in CDR's residential care for children and adolescents.
The group is open to parents of children of all ages. It is not necessary for parents or their children to have psychological problems or to see a specialist. After the program begins, they will have four group meetings with other parents, three individual consultations with the trainer, and a final group meeting. The total duration is 8 weeks. Because some of the meetings are group-based, parents gain a supportive collective and can share experiences of parenting in the Triple P context and with each other in general.
After completing the full course of the program , parents will gain the ability to create a safe and nurturing environment, support their child's learning and independence, use positive and respectful discipline, have realistic expectations for their child's age and abilities, while nurturing their own well-being and balance. These skills help parents to act confidently, calmly and effectively in everyday parenting.
