Comprehensive care at European level
At a time when the number of people with mental illness and psychological problems is increasing, the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation (CDR) offers a full range of acute and follow-up psychiatric care with the involvement of top Czech psychiatric experts. The five-storey, 25,000 m2 building cost CZK 1.2 billion and is interwoven with the latest technologies and equipment to meet the conditions for modern medicine in terms of function and layout. In full operation, it will accommodate more than 200 patients in the inpatient section and offer around 300 jobs for medical and other staff. "We can treat the body quite well, but it is worse with the soul. The construction of the Centre will enable us to provide psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care to people who are struggling with mental health problems. These are rapidly increasing at the moment," says the founder and owner of AKESO Holding, Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.
A wide range of patients will find help in the Beroun facility, and the medical care will be designed as comprehensive. The services will be aimed both at people with sudden onset mental health problems and for those who are not sufficiently treated in the current care system. It is therefore about acute psychiatric care on the one hand and the provision of structured psychotherapeutic programmes on the other. The centre will provide not only outpatient care, but also day centre programmes and inpatient care. "The aim of the holding is to build an excellent network of regional services that provides comprehensive care for people living with mental illness or at risk of developing mental illness, while also providing services of supra-regional importance in the form of psychotherapeutic programmes for patients who do not have access to adequate specialised services," adds Martin Hollý, M.D., MBA, Deputy Director for Mental Health at the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation.
State-of-the-art treatment technologies, safety and light
The construction of the Centre took five years and involved a team of Czech and foreign architects and designers who designed an exceptional space with many special features. The building is full of natural light and uses natural materials to promote the mental well-being of patients. The Mental Rehabilitation Centre also features a multifunctional hall, sauna, swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness room, café or separate rooms for a wide range of specialised therapies such as art therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, virtual reality therapy, phototherapy, etc. Light not only dominates the building, but is also part of the therapeutic tools and processes. In fact, the whole building, including the rooms, has unique lighting that respects the circadian rhythm, i.e. the light intensity changes according to the phase of the day - in the morning, patients have different light in their rooms than in the evening twilight, and the system can be individually adjusted to suit each patient.
"The key is that the care a patient receives from us is comprehensive. So the patient will not only have pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, but also a range of other activities. All these parts need to be linked and complementary. This is often lacking in today's care. The aim of the Centre is to piece together care in such a way that each part makes sense in the patient's story. Specifically, this means that the program will be full-day and the patient will have group therapy, follow-up programs, and then individual therapy as needed. But unlike usual care, we want the program to be designed specifically for a particular problem. The care in the CDR will be followed by long-term care for the patient in inpatient, outpatient and outreach care," says Professor Ján Praško, who is behind the idea and the creation of the care plan and the system of medical programmes of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation.
The project of the Mental Rehabilitation Centre is an expression of the AKESO Medical Group's long-term effort to provide comprehensive care in all its facilities in a dignified environment and using the latest procedures and knowledge. "Through the Mental Rehabilitation Centre, I want to show that it is possible to do psychiatry at a high level even in Czech conditions. At AKESO we simply do things differently and never settle for the average. Modern, unique, complex and at the level of the 21st century - this is the kind of care our clients deserve and this is what our facility offers them," adds the owner of the holding Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.
