The effect of noise on hearing and murmur, stimulation methods in the treatment of tinnitus and its psychological comorbidities or tinnitus as a symptom of vestibular schwannoma. These were some of the topics of the national Tinnitus Symposium, which took place on Thursday, November 14, at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. It was unique in that it was the first conference ever to address the topic of tinnitus in a multidisciplinary approach.

The professional conference, which was intended primarily for doctors and health professionals from the fields of ENT, neurology, psychiatry, psychotherapy or physical medicine, was organized by the non-profit organization NETICHO in cooperation with the Czech Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. The general partner of the event was the medical holding AKESO, which also provided the premises and facilities in its modern multifunctional hall of the Mental Rehabilitation Centre.

The topics of the lectures, which were attended by more than 130 listeners, presented the current state of diagnostics and therapy, possibilities of disciplinary cooperation, new perspectives, procedures, services and products related to tinnitus. "This is basically the first ever multidisciplinary conference on tinnitus that has ever been held and I am very pleased that we could be a general partner and participate in the organization and expert lectures. The issue of tinnitus is becoming increasingly well-known among professionals and patients, and our doctors at the Mental Rehabilitation Centre are also working on tinnitus as part of the use of neurostimulation," says Martin Sklenář, M.D., MBA, LL.M., Director of Health Policy and Reimbursement at AKESO Holding.

The topic entitled Non-invasive neurostimulation therapy and its use in the treatment of tinnitus was presented to the audience by neurologist and psychosomatic specialist of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation David Pánek, M.D., Ph.D. "The lecture focused on the possibilities of using the so-called non-invasive brain stimulation in the treatment of tinnitus. At our department we use two modern neurostimulation methods - repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial low-intensity direct current stimulation (tDCS), which represent a safe complementary treatment for patients suffering from tinnitus. Tinnitus is a serious, multifactorial disease and, especially in its chronic form, places a great burden on patients' normal functioning in life. In addition to whistling, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, it also causes a number of other problems, such as insomnia, irritability, increased daytime fatigue or musculoskeletal pain, and therefore the problem needs to be treated comprehensively. At the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital, in cooperation with ENT doctors, we combine neurological and rehabilitation treatment as well as psychotherapeutic treatment in one place."

However, it is not always the case that the patient meets with the doctor's understanding and validation of his problem. This is the problem that Bc. Eliška Kvasničková, preventionist of social pathologies in the psychotherapy team of Bohnice hospital. "In my session, which I called Possibilities of Effective Communication with the Patient, I tried to show that a patient with tinnitus needs first of all to feel hope, which unfortunately often does not happen. Hope, humanity and understanding from health professionals and professionals who do not belittle the problem - that is what patients need. Unfortunately, I, as a patient, did not encounter this during my treatment. If we give patients hope that their condition will improve, we can make a great contribution to improving it and thus reduce the intensity of tinnitus symptoms. In my input, I also invited two guests who also have personal experience with this problem to talk about their feelings. I must appreciate the openness with which they shared their difficulties with the audience."

Other topics presented by national and international guests included the role of physical therapy in the treatment of tinnitus - high power laser treatment, changes in the auditory system caused by tinnitus, sound therapy - Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), cognitive behavioural therapy in the treatment of tinnitus, Silence - how do we help people with tinnitus?
in children and adolescents, traffic accidents and whiplash syndrome - effective prevention, diagnosis and therapy.

According to current statistics, up to 14% of the population in the Czech Republic suffers from tinnitus. There may be several causes, most often tinnitus is caused by excessive noise, vestibular schwannoma, or excessive or prolonged stress. The age limit of patients with this diagnosis is decreasing and tinnitus does not avoid children and adolescents.
