31. 10. 2025

In mid-October, the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation (CDR) became a destination for dozens of psychiatric nurses from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In cooperation with the Psychiatric Section of the Czech Nurses Association (ČAS), CDR organized a conference focused on the specifics of care for patients with mental illness.

The two-day event entitled In the Footsteps of Psychiatric Nursing XXVII offered two hundred participants a combination of expert lectures and practical workshops where they could try out modern nursing techniques and approaches to therapy. In addition, the programme also included the announcement of the Psychiatric Section of the CAS Award for the Development of Psychiatric Nursing in the Czech Republic and a social evening where participants could further exchange experiences. Traditionally, those interested could see the building of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation and see how the treatment looks like in practice.

"The highly specialised expertise of the psychiatric nurse makes her competent for many specific procedures, whether in inpatient, outpatient or community care. The strengthening of the role of psychiatric nurses is evident in the development of legislative norms or other professional recommendations related to mental health care, where nurses are full partners for discussion and professional perspective," highlights the role of psychiatric nurses in treatment, says the chairman of the Psychiatric Section of the CAS , Mgr. Jan Běhounek. He opened the conference and spoke about new developments in psychiatric care and the use of restraints.

In order to provide the participants with the broadest possible perspective on the topic of psychiatric nursing, the programme was attended by employees of several different departments and institutions, such as the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital, the Mental Health Centre, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and many others. The CDR as a host department was of course not to be missed - its employees presented themselves in several program items.

Together they described the functioning of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation, its specifics and challenges over the past two years of operation, the use of culinary therapy, neurostimulation in treatment or the process of dealing with complaints from psychiatric patients.

The highlight of the Friday programme was a lecture by Tomáš Šebek, MD, surgeon at the Day Care Centre of the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, promoter of medicine and member of Doctors Without Borders. In his presentation, he spoke not only about the missions for Doctors Without Borders, but especially about the role of humanity in healthcare and how he himself grew up as a doctor. Mgr. et Mgr. Eliška Pousková, DiS., station nurse of the acute ward, also took the microphone as one of the organizers on the first day of the conference.
