During the weekend of 18 - 20 October 2024, nearly 400 participants from the ranks of doctors and students from all over the Czech Republic and Slovakia gathered at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. The event, which can be considered unique in its size, offered more than 200 workshops. According to their preferences, guests could choose from 60 surgical, intensive care, internal medicine, paraclinical or communication topics.
"I am delighted that we were the general partner of such an important event. Our medical facilities are at the top level not only in the Czech Republic but also in Europe. We have a lot to offer in the field of modern medicine, whether it is the latest devices and approaches to treatment or the latest technologies and robotic medicine. Of course, I will be very happy if the doctors like us and become our future colleagues," says the Chairman of the Board of Directors and owner of AKESO Holding Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.
As part of a busy programme at the Beroun hospital, the young doctors were able to try out, for example, labour management, neurosurgical skills, open abdominal surgery, such as suturing the stomach, intestines and aorta. Furthermore, ECHO of the heart, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in virtual reality, communication with a restless patient, military and tactical medicine and much more. Specialty topics included medical record keeping, efficiency and economics of healthcare delivery, and management skills in healthcare.
Experts from the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation guided those interested through the areas of psychiatry, neurostimulation techniques, addiction issues, working with aggressive patients and burnout syndrome. "We also looked at the role of phototherapy as a tool of satisfaction. This workshop was held in a room with completely unique lighting, and participants were able to see the effects for themselves. It is known that the duration and alternation of light and darkness construct circadian rhythms that control subjective activation, mood quality, attention, selective reaction time, short-term memory performance, etc. Mood, cognition and behaviour have a complex relationship with biological rhythms, and the vast majority of mental disorders are reciprocally associated with impairments in biological rhythms. We have explained how circadian rhythms are controlled, how they are influenced and what we can do to maintain their quality," says Pavel Doubek, M.D., Ph.D., psychiatrist at the Center for Mental Rehabilitation.
In addition to the practical exercises, however, a rich discussion program awaited the participants.
As part of the thematic units After the Medina Arena, the young doctors were able to participate in several discussion blocks. "For example, we discussed mutual expectations from their future profession or what is the quality of teaching at medical schools? We also touched on the topic of the healthcare system and what kind of work young doctors in the Czech Republic are actually doing. In addition, participants could discuss with directors of Czech hospitals and data experts about the efficiency of the Czech healthcare system and finding solutions for its optimization," says the founder of the Po medina project and co-organizer of the event MUDr. Martin Palička.
After the expert programme, an entertainment programme was prepared for doctors and medics.
The Centre for Mental Rehabilitation is a quite exceptional building, where a unique lighting system is visible at first sight, which imitates the natural daily cycle and whose influence leads to the restoration of the correct setting of circadian rhythms. This appropriately applied light regime has the effect of treating symptoms of mood disorders, improving activity, positively affecting memory and, last but not least, the quality and duration of sleep. The building itself is therefore an exceptional therapeutic tool.
The Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital is one of the best equipped and most comfortable workplaces of its type in the Czech Republic and Europe. Another workplace that belongs to the Beroun hospital is the Day Psychotherapy Sanatorium "Ondřejov" in Prague. The AKESO holding also includes the Hořovice Hospital, the Multiscan Oncology and Radiology Centre in Pardubice, the AKESO Polyclinic in Nové Butovice, Prague, the SENIMED pharmacy network and others.
