Thousands of patients and successful publications. Mental Rehabilitation Centre celebrates two years since opening

26. 6. 2025

On Friday, 20 June, two years have passed since the grand opening of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation (CDR). The psychiatric facility, which is part of the Beroun Rehabilitation Hospital, has already established itself as one of the leading places for the treatment of mental health problems in the Czech Republic and Europe and proves that mental health care can be conducted in a modern, empathetic and dignified manner.

Since the CDR opened its doors to Central Bohemian patients, 1,647 patients have been hospitalized there, and 3,688 patients have received psychiatric outpatient care.

"In the two years of the Centre's existence, we have overcome a great number of difficulties related to building a "greenfield" operation, for which we owe a great deal of thanks to all those who have been with us on this journey. We have succeeded in becoming a respected part of the system of care for people with mental illness in the region, thus filling the gap in access to care," says Martin Hollý, M.D., MBA , Deputy Director for Mental Health Care, looking back on the CDR's operations to date.

The CDR currently has four acute care stations, one psychotherapy unit, eight suites offering individualized care, four inpatient groups and an outpatient clinic for specialized mental health services. Patients are cared for by two hundred staff, with the understanding that the number of staff should always outnumber the number of patients to ensure that they receive maximum care and attention. Another great asset of the CDR is the close cooperation with other departments of the Beroun hospital, thanks to which patients receive comprehensive treatment for their psychological and somatic problems.

"What I appreciate about CDR is the completely different approach to psychiatric care than what was and is usual in our country. The cooperation and direct communication of the individual professional teams have a significant positive impact on the treatment results of our patients," praises the head of the Centre for Mental Rehabilitation Pavel Doubek, M.D. , Ph.D.

In addition to patient care, CDR employees are also involved in academic activities. Dozens of articles have been written for Czech and foreign periodicals on topics related to the treatment methods used in the CDR. In addition, almost thirty articles, in which the head of the therapeutic programmes of the CDR, Prof. Ján Praško Pavlov, M.D., CSc., participated, have been published in impacted foreign journals. They also regularly participate in conferences in the Czech Republic and Europe, both as audience and lecturers. In 2025 alone, CDR lecturers presented, for example, at the 67th Czech-Slovak Psychopharmacology Conference in Mariánské Lázně, where the hospital had its own symposium, as well as at the Treatment in Psychiatry Conference in Mikulov and the 21st National Conference of Biological Psychiatry with International Participation in Luhačovice.

When the more than billion-dollar CDR project was being developed, the owner of AKESO Holding, Sotirios Zavalianis, promised a place where patients would receive top-quality care for their minds in a pleasant environment. This was achieved and the opening ceremony in 2023 was attended by Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Health Minister Vlastimil Válek, who emphasised the importance of opening new psychiatric facilities.

The Mental Rehabilitation Centre remains a new and dynamically developing facility. This year it will open additional wards, expand the number of beds or introduce new psychotherapeutic and diagnostic programmes that will further complement the complex mosaic of care provided.
